Walter J. Barbour

Walter J. Barbour, 91, of Hallstead, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023. On February 15, 1932, Walter was born in Patterson, NJ, to James H. and Marie (Baus) Barbour, who preceded him in death. In the early 1940s, Walter's family moved to Liberty Township in Susquehanna County, where farming became his family's way of life. After graduating from Montrose High School in 1950, he helped on the farm before becoming a well known stone contractor in the 1960s. Many of his beautifully crafted stone walls and patios can still be found decorating the yards of houses in Vestal, NY and the surrounding area. He enjoyed reminiscing about his younger days in Patterson, remembering every street name and working with his grandfather, who started a German butcher shop in Patterson. Coming from a generation where things could always be fixed, he enjoyed working in his garage where he could fix practically anything. He also enjoyed fishing, the Yankees, and Penn State football games, but most of all a good conversation. In 1954, Walter married the love of his life, Loretta (Turner), and they were married for 67 wonderful years until she passed in 2022. Walter is survived by his children: Audrey (Howard) Updyke of Montrose, PA, Walter C. (Lori) Barbour of Vestal, NY, Brenda (Harold) Turner of Moneta, VA, and Calvin (Michele) Barbour of Towanda, PA; grandchildren: Morgan Updyke, Jared Updyke, Kimberly (Chad) Williams, Brittany (Brandon) Manley, Amanda (Greg) Honeychuck, Monica (Nicholas) Inman, Travis Turner, Samantha Turner, Camryn Barbour, and Evan Barbour; great grandchildren: Creighton Honeychuck, Madelyn Honeychuck, Scarlett Williams, Holden Williams, and Grant Inman. Walter is survived by his sisters-in-law Marilyn Race of Charlotte, NC, Jeanine Turner, FL, Sara Lee Barbour, FL, brother-in-law, Donald (Chris) Turner, FL, step-brother, Roger Root, many nieces and nephews, and longtime friends and neighbors Dennis and Pam Donhauser. He was preceded in death by his brother, James B. Barbour, sister-in-law May Lindsey, brother-in-law, Douglas Race, and step-siblings Robert Root, Ronald Root, and Reudonna Pickett. The family would like to share their heartfelt gratitude with his caregivers, Dr. Joseph Speicher, and the nurses at EMHS. Per Walter's request, there will be no service. Interment will be in Lawsville Cemetery.
