Shirley Ann Root

September 11, 1936 - January 19, 2022

Shirley Ann Root, 85, of Hallstead, PA passed away peacefully on January 19, 2022 at Meadow View Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Montrose, PA. Born on September 11, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Oscar E. and Ruth O. Wilmot Button. She graduated from Windsor School and started raising a family in Lawsville, PA. In 1973 she moved the family to Hallstead and worked for Magnetic Labs/Savin Corp, and started Shirley’s Greenhouse, selling flowers and plants. She later worked for ARA Vending Co/American Food and Vending until her retirement. In her retirement, she started a pie and cookie business, which she enjoyed for a few years. Her greatest loves in life were getting together with family and friends, enjoying the simple things together, planting flowers, gardening, and baking all kinds of goodies. Shirley is survived by her sons, David Root (Mary Lewis), Robert (Pamela) Root, William Root (Susan Polage), and Michael Root; a brother, Norman Button; sisters, Bertha Acker and Evelyn Sprague; grandchildren, Elizabeth Thompkins and Madelyn Root; great grandchildren, Darren Stilson and Mikayla Stilson; great great grandchild, Elliot Schinse; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Root; brothers, Kenneth Button, Donald Button, and Alan Button; and a sister, Ruth Liechti. Shirley will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts. A celebration of life service will be held at a future date in the spring by the family. In lieu of flowers, make donations to your local food bank, Salvation Army, or another local charity.
